,No matter how many times you hear that CBD truly doesn’t get you “HIGH” but it still causes quite a bit of confusion among the community. Whether that be a doctor warning a patient about the possible risks, or a patient asking their doctor on the benefits, people still have questions. That’s what this article is here to clear up. In the past few years there has been a huge increase in interest on the subject of CBD and it’s non-intoxicated properties and the fact that it does have numerous therapeutic properties. Between the flooded market of people pushing subpar CBD products, along touting that CBD from hemp can help a slew of ailments, all the while leaving the patient without that “STONED” feeling, we want to help to clear the air around the most common misconceptions and give you the information around CBD and its benefits.

One of the most frequent questions first time CBD buyers ask is whether or not you can get high off CBD.  The straight forward answer is “No”: CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabis compound, it can not and does not produce feelings of being high like it’s sibling THC.  CBD is non-intoxicating. CBD is one of hundreds of naturally occurring cannabinoids found in hemp plants, and while evidence suggests it offers many benefits including enhanced relaxation, pain & anxiety relief, and improved sleep, it is not considered a mind altering substance. The question of CBD causing a high effect is often quesitoned when if comes to CBD Flower. While CBD flower may look and smell like your typically high-inducing marijana bud, it is specifically grown to have less that .3% THC.

Naturally, if CBD does not get you high then the next most common question is does CBD really do anything?  The straightforward answer is absolutely “Yes”. Log onto any CBD forum or chat group, and you will see a multitude of people boasting about CBD’s effects most of which range from pain and anxiety relief to improved sleep and overall positivity.  Of course, the positive benefits of CBD are not free from controversy, which is due to the lack of strict regulation in the current marketplace. This is why we’re super adimant about carrying quality products with third party tested labs. To ensure that we’re bringing quality products to our community here in Indy.

CBD and THC have many of the same medical benefits. They can provide relief from several of the same conditions. However, CBD doesn’t cause the psychoactive, euphoric effects that occur with THC. Some people may prefer to use CBD because of the lack of this side effect.

Misconception #1: CBD is illegal.

The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, which was signed into law on Dec. 20, 2018, changed the definition of marijuana to exclude “hemp” – plant material that contains 0.3 percent or less delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis. Accordingly, hemp, including hemp plants and cannabidiol (CBD) preparations at or below the 0.3 percent delta-9 THC threshold, is not considered a controlled substance, and a DEA registration is not required to grow or research it.

Although the above was recently released by the Drug Enforcement Administration, not all states have clear rulings on CBD. In some states, there are explicit laws allowing the retail sale of industrial hemp-derived products. Other places are without obvious prohibitions against the retail sale of industrial hemp-derived CBD products but do have exemptions in the law for the argument that hemp-derived CBD products are legal. Further still, another group of states has no explicit prohibitions against the sale of industrial hemp-derived CBD products.

Misconception #2: CBD makes you high and will result in failed drug tests.

CBD is not psychotropic, and either does not contain THC or enough THC to cause psychoactive feelings or experiences. CBD was first isolated in 1963, a year before THC. It was discovered not long afterward that CBD does not get users high. Isolate CBD contains 0% THC and will not cause a failed drug test. Full Spectrum CBD contains THC levels within legal limits.

Misconception #3: CBD has to be smoked.

There are a myriad of ways to utilize CBD oil. It can be swallowed or held under your tongue. It can be eaten via edibles or mixed in food and drinks. Rubbing it into your skin is also an option, as well as washing and conditioning hair with CBD oil. A wide range of infused products are on the market today including lip balms, candy, bath bombs, under-eye serum, mascara, tea, honey, and even sparkling water. CBD can also be vaped, with a range of flavors added.

Misconception #4: CBD is only for sick people.

Consumption of CBD does not need to be accompanied by a prescription, although discussion with a doctor before use is encouraged. While CBD has medical studies backing its use for ailments such as cancer (as in hindering spread and inducing death of cancer cells), heart disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), glaucoma, chronic pain, acne, seizures and epilepsy, it can also be useful for treating sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and stress.

In addition to historically helping humans, dogs and cats also benefit from the popularity growth of CBD. Food, oils, and treats for dogs and cats are customized to reduce joint pain and anxiety.

Misconception #5: CBD takes a long time to work.

The effects and timeframe are dependent on the method of consumption and the individual consuming the CBD. Generally, CBD oil added to a coffee or smoothie will probably take around 30 minutes before any effect is felt, as opposed to putting a few drops under your tongue, which will allow the CBD to enter your system faster. While CBD is ideally used as a dietary supplement and can take up to four to six weeks to realize its full benefits, other styles of consumption will allow for quicker results.

In June 2018, the FDA approved Trusted Source Epidiolex, the first prescription medication to contain CBD. It’s used to treat rare, difficult-to-control forms of epilepsy. (Epidiolex is not currently approved for any of the other conditions listed below.)

CBD is used to help with other various conditions, such as:

THC is used to help with the following:

CBD vs. THC: Side effects

CBD is well tolerated, even in large doses. ResearchTrusted Source suggests any side effects that occur with CBD use are likely the result of drug-to-drug interactions between CBD and other medications you may be taking.

In recent studies, 30-40% of users reported adverse side effects*. THC causes temporary side effects, such as:

  • increased heart rate
  • coordination problems
  • dry mouth
  • red eyes
  • slower reaction times
  • memory loss
  • anxiety

In studies, only 10% of users reported any adverse side effects*. CBD’s side effects may include:

  • appetite changes
  • fatigue
  • weight loss
  • dizziness
  • diarrhea

These side effects are part of the compound’s psychoactive properties.

Neither compound is fatal.

However, high THC use may be connected to long-term negative psychiatric effects. This is especially true for adolescents who consume large amounts of THC, though there’s no conclusive evidence that using cannabis causes psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia.

CBD vs. THC: Drug testing

Cannabinoids like THC and CBD are stored in the body’s fat. They can show up on drug tests for several days or weeks after you use them.

Not every drug test will be able to detect CBD, but CBD-sensitive tests are available. Most standard drug tests will look for chemicals related to THC, so THC or marijuana use might show up on a screening.

Likewise, hemp can produce some THC in addition to CBD, so a test could be positive for THC even if you haven’t used it.

It’s important to note that products that claim to be THC-free may not be free of THC, so if you’re drug tested, you shouldn’t use any CBD or THC products.

Why do people talk about THC content in CBD oil if THC and CBD are two different compounds?

CBD and THC are two of the most prominent cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Both cannabis and hemp produce CBD and THC.

However, cannabis has a higher concentration of THC. Hemp has a higher concentration of CBD.

The average cannabis strain today contains about 12 percent trusted Source THC. CBD oil may contain small amounts of THC because it’s present at low levels in the hemp plant. CBD can have no more than 0.3 percent THC to be legal at the federal level.

PHARMACEUTICAL CBD

Bereft of the THC stigma (and its therapeutic moxy), single-molecule CBD recently became a FDA-approved pharmaceutical for pediatric seizure disorders. This is good news for families with epileptic children that have health insurance. Anyone without health insurance won’t be able to afford Epidiolex, a nearly pure CBD remedy developed by GW Pharmaceuticals as an anti-seizure medication.

Consider the dosage range utilized in clinical trials of epidiolex. Children with catastrophic seizure disorders were given up to 20 mg of epidiolex per kg of body weight. Such high doses caused interactions with other anticonvulsant medications, requiring adjustments of the latter to avoid a toxic overdose.

By comparison, Dr. Bonni Goldstein, author of Cannabis Revealed, typically starts with a much lower dose of full spectrum CBD-rich oil (1 mg CBD/kg of body weight) for epileptic children – with the understanding that the dose may have to be lowered or raised depending on the initial response. If necessary, Goldstein will increase the dose of CBD by increments of 0.5 mg/kg until a threshold of 5 mg/kg of body weight is reached. And that amount also may need to be adjusted.

Kids and adults metabolize drugs differently. It may seem counterintuitive, but young children can tolerate high doses of cannabis oil concentrates, including THC-rich formulations, which might be daunting for an adult. Thus, it’s not a good idea to calculate dosage for an adult based on what works for a child.

If 1 mg/kg of CBD is an appropriate starting dose for a child, and an adult weighs 15 times more than the child, one should not assume that the correct CBD starting dose for the grown-up is 15mg/kg of body weight. That could be way too high a dose. While CBD has no known adverse effects at any dose, an excessive amount of CBD may be less effective therapeutically than a moderate dose.
Similarly, it’s not a good idea to devise a dosage regimen based on data from preclinical animal studies, which usually involve high doses of single-molecule cannabinoids. Human metabolism differs from mice and rats, and data from animal models doesn’t always translate to human experience.

PERSONALIZED MEDICINE

For people as well as pets, cannabis dosage must be individually determined. Several factors come into play, including one’s overall health and endocannabinoid tone, which are influenced by diet, exercise, sleep patterns, day-to-day stress, and genetics. Cannabis is best used as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Here are some dosage variables to consider:

  • Cannabis experience. Has the patient used cannabis before? Or are they a stoner who already uses cannabis every day but isn’t getting the best results? A veteran user may need a higher dose than a new user. Or a chronic user might need a break from getting high to reboot his or her sensitivity to cannabis (see Dr. Dustin Sulak’s cannabis “sensitization protocol” on Healer.com).

  • Time of day. Optimizing one’s therapeutic use of cannabis may entail using products with different CBD:THC ratios at different times of the day –  more CBD for daylight hours, more THC at night.

  • Preventive dosing. Prolonged low dose therapy may be advantageous for managing chronic symptoms or to prevent disease recurrence. Preclinical studies indicate that cannabinoids have neuroprotective and cardioprotective properties that could limit the damage of a traumatic brain injury or a heart attack.

  • Cannabinoid acids. Raw, unheated cannabis contains CBD and THC in their “acid” form, CBDA and THCA, which are not intoxicating. Consumed orally over several months, cannabinoid acids can be effective in very small amounts, but precise dosing is difficult when juicing raw cannabis. Other delivery systems are becoming available for CBDA-rich and THCA-rich products.

Cannabis is a safe and forgiving medicine. Figuring out how to make the most of its health-enhancing properties may involve some trial and error. No worries! At least cannabis isn’t harmful like so many FDA-approved pharmaceuticals.

So if you’re new to cannabis medicine or if you’re seeking to improve your therapeutic routine, remember this advice from Dr. Sulak: “Start low, go slow, and don’t be afraid to go all the way!”

Is CBD Legal? Hemp-derived CBD products (with less than 0.3 percent THC) are legal on the federal level, but are still illegal under some state laws. Marijuana-derived CBD products are illegal on the federal level, but are legal under some state laws. Check your state’s laws and those of anywhere you travel. Keep in mind that nonprescription CBD products are not FDA-approved, and may be inaccurately labeled.
