What Is CBD?

So….What is CBD?

Let us start with an introduction.

Cannabidiol, known by the acronym CBD, is a naturally occurring compound that is found in the cannabis/hemp plant. It’s being grown, manufactured, and produced in a wide variety of products on the market today. From picking the flower for smoking, Vapor Cartridges, Tinctures and Oils, Edibles, Concentrates, Beauty Products, and even Pet Treats, it has a plethora of uses, often assisting the user with pain relief, stress reduction, an antidepressant, and as a nighttime sleep aid.

Now, here’s the kicker. Unlike it’s cousin THC, CBD is not psychoactive.

Today, scientists and doctors around the world are confirming its therapeutic properties and finding new uses for it regularly. It’s a safe, non-addictive, natural substance that we strongly believe in as a supplement for many of the pharmaceuticals hiding in all of our cabinets.

Wait, back up? What do you mean by CBD is Non-Psychoactive?

Simple stated, CBD doesn’t get you HIGH. The cannabis plant is made up of two main players: CBD and THC.

According to Junella Chin, DO, an oseteo-physician and Medical Cannabis Expert with cannabisMD, “CBD is the non-psychoactive portion of the plant, so what that means is you won’t have any effects like euphoria. You won’t feel sedated or altered in any way.”

Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce chronic pain by impacting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation and interacting with neurotransmitters.

What’s the difference between Cannabis, Marijuana, and Hemp then?

You’ve probably heard the terms cannabis, marijuana, and hemp all tossed around in relation to CBD. The plant Cannabis sativa has two primary species, hemp and marijuana. Both contain CBD, but there’s a much higher percentage of CBD found in hemp, which also has very low (less than 0.3%) levels of THC compared to marijuana.

So in short, CBD is a compound found in the cannabis plant. It’s a natural, healthy, non-addictive, non-psychoactive ingredient that has been shown to have a multitude of both mental/physical health benefits.

But, before we dive into the benefits, let us break down how CBD interacts with the body.

The human body contains a specialized system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is involved in regulating a variety of functions including sleep, appetite, pain and immune system response.

The body produces endocannabinoids, which are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors in your nervous system.

Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce chronic pain by impacting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation and interacting with neurotransmitters.

Alright, now the benefits. We’ll make it simple and won’t drag you down with studies and super long descriptions right now. We’re just going to list it out.

  • Can Relieve Pain
  • Can Reduce Anxiety/Depression
  • Is an Anti-Inflammatory (great for skin and joints)
  • Contains Neuroprotective Properties (protects from degeneration)
  • Reduce High Blood Pressure and support healthy heart functions
  • Anti-Psychotic
  • Supplement for Substance Abuse
  • Diabetes Prevention

So, as you can see, CBD can be used for a list of ailments, as a general everyday supplement for prevention, and can provide a better quality of life for users across the board.

Are there any side effects?

CBD is generally well tolerated and considered safe. But, just like any supplement, pill, shot, or drug, it can have adverse side effects in some users.

Side effects noted in studies include

  • Diarrhea
  • Changes in appetite and weight
  • Fatigue

CBD is also known to interact with several medications. Before you start using CBD oil, discuss it with your doctor to ensure your safety and avoid potentially harmful interactions.

All in all, research on the potential health benefits of CBD oil is ongoing and new therapeutic uses for this natural remedy are being discovered very frequently.

Though there is much to be learned about the efficacy and safety of CBD, results from recent studies suggest that CBD may provide a safe, powerful natural treatment for many health issues.
